
Why Ferrara?
Ferrara Is Italy’s city of bicycles! A small walled medieval city in Emilia- Romagna. It sits closely to the Po river and is located between Venice and Bologna.
The city offers a lively historical centre with a basilica and castle. It has winding streets of places to eat, drink and local business. Bike rentals are available so you can get around like a local. 90% of them own a bicycle.
See an art exhibition in the Piazza del Diamante. Built by Biagio Rosetti in 1495, walls of the Palazzo are covered in the embossed with carved stone. The diamond form plays with light and shadow across the entire façade.
Nearby is Parco Massari. Here you can relax and admire the gigantic Lebanese cedar near the entrance to the park. Its long and thick branches are supported by metal stilts a Dali painting.
In the center of Ferrara is the impressive Castello Estense which was built in the 1300s. Encircled by a turquoise moat, the castle is an imposing structure of towers and impenetrable walls.

Getting There
Ferrara has many pedestrianised areas making it ideal for taking you time and exploring on foot and with children. You can rent bicycles that will give you the flexibility to explore and move around with speed.
Linea Urbano means the inner city connection and extraurbano means the area outside the centre. This can change the price of your ticket, saving you money if you are travelling only within the center of the city.

From the station you can catch the bus no. 9, The bus takes around 5 minutes. If you hop off at Cavour Giardini stop – you are very close to the Castello Estense and you are very central.
Heading out of the center you will find the original city walls. Here you can enjoy the walks and historical ruins. They are perfect for exploring by bike or on foot.





Getting Around
Ferrara is on the rail line that connects Bologna and Venice. You can use the France to Milan route or the Austria to Verona route to get to Ferrara.
One option is to start from the Netherlands and take the OBB night train through Germany and Austria and then taking the 3hour 30 Railjet connection to Verona and from there you can change in Padova for the short connection to Ferrara.
Ferrara neighbours Bologna so you could look at using this opportunity to travel between the two cities.
